Go Green With Tire Pressure

I often get asked how one person can make a difference in helping our planet.  Many people do not have money to invest in solar or wind power for their homes.  Others simply don’t have the time to change their habits.  However, there are many small changes that everyone can implement without much expense or time investment.  One of those changes is to maintain proper air pressure in the tires on our vehicles.  It’s true, this relatively easy tip will reduce one’s own carbon footprint.

There are several good reasons to maintain proper air pressure in your vehicle’s tires.  They include better gas mileage, fuel savings, less wear on tires, and less pollution emitted from your car.  But, the most important reason is a safer vehicle.  Here are a few tips and thoughts to keep in mind.

Don’t Over-inflate

So many times it seems people feel their tires should be inflated to the maximum level.  However, the key is to inflate to the manufactures recommended level.  If your car is still equipped with its original tires you can usually find the tire placard label inside the driver’s side door jamb or in your owner’s manual.  Conversely, if you have aftermarket tires installed, always retain the information given to you by the dealer for proper inflation levels.

Better Gas Mileage

In today’s tough economic times everyone is concerned with conserving fuel.  Tires inflated to the proper level will increase your miles per gallon which is good for your pocket book and the environment.  Under-inflated tires will allow more of the tire surface to drag along the road surface.  This increased friction will cause your engine to work harder to maintain speed, thus increasing fuel consumption.

Tires That Last Longer

The friction or drag mentioned above from under-inflated tires also causes more heat generation and tire rubber loss.  This not only increases fuel usage but it also can cause tire to overheat.  On the other hand, over-inflated tires can cause a more bouncy ride, uneven wear, and result in a more puncture prone tire.

Less Emissions

By now you get the idea.  An under-inflated tire will cause an increased use of fuel which results in, you guessed it, more emissions.

Safety

As I mentioned earlier, the number one goal of proper tire inflation is safety for you and your family.  Improperly inflated tires can lead to a reduced ability to handle your vehicle.  Accurate handling can be the difference between an accident and no accident at all.

In addition to handling, tires with incorrect pressure are more prone to damage.  You don’t want to be driving if a tire fails and results in a blow out.

So, it really is true that everyone can do even the least amount of work and still contribute to a sustainable planet.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.  Please consider leaving a comment below and share your insights with others.

This is excellent advice to help all of us. Under-inflated tire will definitely wear out sooner. Thanks
