Five Ways To Improve The Air Quality In Your Home

The indoor air quality of your home can have a huge affect on your family’s health.  In fact, the term sick building syndrome is an identified disorder.  The problem can be due to the chemical nature of many building materials which can be largely out of your control.  However, most poor air quality home environments can be attributed to sources that are under your control.

Here is a brief look at five tips for improving your home air quality.

Open Windows

If you live in an area where the outdoor air quality is not a problem then simply opening your windows can go along way in improving the air in your home.  The best way to implement this tip is to open windows that are across from each other to take advantage of cross-ventilation.  If there is a breeze, your home should clear out quickly.

Use Purifiers

If you live in a polluted area or in a very humid region, opening your windows may not be an option.  Indoor air purifiers have become quite popular for this reason.  They work by taking in air from your home and running it through a filter.  The clean air is then pumped out into your home.  Using fans to circulate the air in your home will help to assure the purifier is able to capture many of the pollutants in your home.

Find The Source

The carpet in your home can be a major source of pollutions.  Carpets are known to collect dust, dander, animal hair, and other allergens.  Plus, if your carpet has been wet in the past it could be a source of mold.  If possible, clean your carpets regularly and remove or replace moldy areas.

Some people are sensitive to wallpaper glues.  A good remedy is to remove the wall covering and apply an eco-friendly paint in its place.

Household cleaner are yet another source of irritation for some individuals.  Consider using eco-friendly cleaners in place of these chemicals.

Employ Houseplants

As nature’s air purifiers, indoor plants work to take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen.  Some good examples are spider plant, peace lilly, pothos, and weeping fig (tree).

Clean Your Filters

Cleaning or changing the filters in your heating and cooling systems regularly will not only help them to run more efficiently but also keep your home cleaner.  Filters come in many types and qualities.  Purchase the ones that make sense financially and trap the most amount of material.

Improve your home’s air quality as often as you can and you just might find your family’s health will thank you!
