Habits That Promote Healthier Sleep

A healthier lifestyle begins by incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine. Habits, once formed, become a regular part of your day and require little extra effort. Getting into the habit of promoting a good night’s sleep can leave you feeling refreshed and more energetic throughout the day. Here are a few habits to help you rest easy at night.

Let’s begin with exercise. As a parent, I’m well aware of how much better my children sleep at night after a day filled with physical activity. The same holds true for us as adults. Exercise helps to relieve the tension in our bodies that leads to headaches, backaches, and digestion issues. A sleepless or restless night can result from built up tension.

Late afternoon or early evening is the best time for sleep promoting exercise. If you wait until just before bed, you will experience a stimulating effect from the activity that may keep you awake. Interestingly enough, the best time to exercise is during the time of day that you feel the most tired. If you follow through with your exercise routine at this time, your sleep will be improved and you should not feel as tired during that same time of day in the future.

Choosing a vigorous exercise for your afternoon activity is best. Consider jogging, biking, or even jumping rope!

The next sleep promoting habit is stretching. This more laid back form of working your muscles can improve circulation and remove muscle toxins that make you uncomfortable at night. Stretching exercises can be performed right before bed. Yoga, Pilates, and other similar methods promote relaxation and a peaceful mindset that lead to a better night’s sleep.

Meditation or prayer can also relieve stress and prepare your mind for a good sleep. Try to spend some quiet time thinking thoughts that bring you peace and happiness.

Some people believe strongly in the use of herbal teas to promote healthy sleep. A warm cup containing Valerian Root, Chamomile, Catnip, or Lemon Balm can help enhance sleep and be quite tasty. Herbal supplements are also available if teas are not your thing.

Other forms of sleep aids include chiropractic adjustments, massage, and acupressure. Similar to stretching, these methods help to align and relax your body.

A good night’s sleep can promote a healthier and happier lifestyle. If you are having trouble sleeping well, try to form good habits such as the ones mentioned here. Your body will thank you!
