Alternative Energy Pros and Cons

You’re probably already familiar with the main sources of alternative energy. However, you may not be aware of the pros and cons of each one. Here are a few points to consider about three of the most popular forms – geothermal, solar, and wind.

Geothermal

Geothermal energy takes advantage of the relatively constant temperature of the sub-surface soil. Heat pumps circulate liquid in pipes below the ground to cool or heat it depending on the season. This liquid is then forced through a grid of small pipes and the heat or cooled energy is released by blowing air across the grid.

Pros:
* Geothermal is a renewable, clean source of energy
* You will be off the grid in terms of gas for heat and electric for chilling (however, electricity is needed to operate the pump)

Cons:
* To install a geothermal system, a lot of digging is required
* Costs can be prohibitive to some budgets

Solar

Pros:
* Solar is a clean, renewable source of energy
* Battery back-up is available to store energy for nights and cloudy days

Cons:
* Solar only collects energy when the sun is shining
* Solar panels can be expensive and tricky to install

Wind

Pros:
* Like geothermal and solar, wind is a clean and renewable source of energy
* Utility costs go down or can even be eliminated depending on the availability of constant wind
* DIY wind turbine kits are readily available and not too expensive

Cons:
* Turbines must be maintained by a professional
* Large wind turbines can kill birds and be very noisy

Overall, installing or equipping your home with these alternative energy sources can become a large expense. However, there are several government assistance programs available to help offset the costs. Check with your state or local government for details. In the United States, visit DSIRE for a listing of incentives by state.

Alternative energy is very exciting. I would love to hear of your experiences in this area. Your comments could encourage or help others as well!
